Compensation Committee

The Compensation Committee discusses the current climate around compensation issues and provide guidance to the Board of Directors on the future roadmap for NAPFA, including advisor responsibilities, industry standing & collaboration, and advice for consumers. The Committee also reviews and recommend changes to NAPFA’s definition of Fee-Only compensation, including the prohibition on certain ownership interests and employment relationships. The Committee

  • Reviews issues posed by potential or existing members with fee-only status
  • Reviews Compensation Committee report for updates to problematic fee models or to clarify or change past rulings

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Familiar with varied compensation models
  • Interested in reviewing prospective member compensation issues

Time Commitment:

  • Ad-hoc meetings via conference call

Conference Committee

The Committee:

  • Outlines the programmatic direction for the event that aligns with NAPFA’s educational priorities and the professional needs of the target audience
  • Reviews background information (program committee surveys, attendee evaluations, speaker recommendations, etc.) supplied by NAPFA staff to aid in conference program planning efforts
  • Identifies 3-4 keynote speakers per event that align with the overall program direction
  • Liaise with the NAPFA Professional Development and Education Committee on the status of planning for the event and request programmatic guidance as needed
  • Identifies and recommend speakers with expertise that align with the event’s programmatic direction and the needs of the target audience
  • As needed, contacts speakers to determine availability and any associated fees
  • Supports NAPFA staff as needed to follow up with speakers to acquire items needed for conference marketing and communications
  • Actively supports the execution of the event marketing plan as directed by NAPFA staff
  • Participates in onsite committee activities (hosting sessions, introducing speakers, attending ancillary programs, etc.)
  • Reviews speaker presentations to ensure accuracy, appropriate educational level and target audience, and relevancy to the described program

This Committee is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Experienced planning an event, either through NAPFA such as a symposium or study group or at their firm or other organization
  • Interested in education or program planning
  • Experienced as a speaker or industry expert

Time Commitment:

  • 8-9 months out from live conference through the conference at which the Committee is expected to attend
  • Monthly conference calls will be had during this time
  • 2-3 hours per month can be expected

Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee

NAPFA has a steering committee dedicated to fulfilling the mission and vision of the Diversity and Inclusion Initiative.

The Committee:

  • Offers scholarships to NAPFA events and for CFP review
  • Facilitates virtual learning sessions and conference sessions focused on diversity and inclusion
  • Creates/shares content on its DiversiFi LinkedIn Group
  • Works to create meaningful resources for advisors looking to hire diverse candidates

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Passionate about increasing diversity within NAPFA and financial planning profession and creating a welcoming environment for all member of the association

Time Commitment:

  • This is a year-round committee
  • Participate on bi-monthly conference calls
  • Volunteer in various onsite activities if attending a conference or event

Ethics Committee

The Committee:

  • Has responsibility for reviewing complaints related to breaches of NAPFA’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Membership.

This Committee is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Experienced members who have participated in disciplinary and/or review proceedings in an equivalent setting.

Time Commitment:

  • Since issues that require the committee’s review are episodic, volunteer time fluctuates. The time commitment could equate to 1-2 hours per month.

General Project Work

The Opportunity:

  • From time to time, NAPFA has specific projects which require volunteer power. A group of volunteers would be formed in order to solve a specific problem or look at a specific issue, and once the work had concluded, the group would disband.

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Are interested in a one off volunteering opportunity with no long term commitment

Time Commitment:

  • Ad hoc, based on project, but would be a commitment of less than six months

Leadership Development Committee

The Committee:

  • Has responsibility for developing and overseeing the process of acquiring a qualified pool of applicants to serve on the NAPFA Board of Directors.

This Committee is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Experienced in serving in board-level volunteer role in NAPFA or an equivalent entity. It is also well suited for members with deep connections to the association and their peers.

Time Commitment:

  • Volunteers can expect to spend 3-5 hours per month including one monthly meeting. During the candidate interview and evaluation process, the time commitment may increase.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee works to recruit and retain fee-only financial advisors to NAPFA. The Committee also evaluates member benefits and works on expanding and evaluating external partnerships. The Committee:

  • Helps to coordinate recruitment and retention plans for members
  • Evaluates new member benefits and offerings
  • Assists onsite to promote NAPFA membership at conferences and events
  • Reviews membership statistics and trends

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Passionate about NAPFA’s growth
  • Interested in developing and evaluating member benefits

Time Commitment:

  • This is a year round committee
  • Participate on monthly conference calls
  • Volunteer in various onsite activities if attending a conference or event

NAPFA Advisor Editorial Working Group

The Committee:

  • Provides input on the editorial direction and content for the Advisor magazine

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Experienced in serving in an in board-level volunteer role in NAPFA or an equivalent entity. It is also well suited for members with deep connections to the association and their peers.

Time Commitment:

  • Volunteers can expect to spend 3-5 hours per month including one monthly meeting. During the candidate interview and evaluation process, the time commitment may increase.

The Communications Committee of the NAPFA Consumer Education Foundation (NCEF) supports the NCEF vision of “Changing lives through pro-bono financial advice” by developing a communications plan to achieve the foundation’s strategic plan.

The Committee

  • Assists in the developing the NCEF strategic communication plan to reach NAPFA members
  • Helps recruit NAPFA volunteers, gain donors and promote NCEF pro-bono programs
  • Provides content for messaging across various print and online media channels

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Experienced or interest in developing marketing and communications efforts
  • Committed to the vision, mission, and goals of NCEF
  • Familiar with charitable organizations

Time Commitment:

  • Preparation and participation in monthly one-hour conference calls; Time to assist with communication efforts. Suggested two-year term

The Programs Committee of the NAPFA Consumer Education Foundation (NCEF) supports the NCEF vision of “Changing lives through pro-bono financial advice” by developing and managing pro-bono programs and supporting the foundation’s strategic plan.

The Committee:

  • Helps in managing two key NCEF partnerships in Building Homes for Heroes and Money Smart Week
  • Identify new pro-bono program opportunities for NCEF to partner with and/or develop
  • Inspire, recruit and support volunteers via the development of training, conference sessions, webinars, and other resources
  • Assist with content for communications of events, seminars and pro-bono resources with the communications committee

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Experienced or interest in pro-bono programs, partnerships and events to fulfill the NCEF mission.
  • Committed to the vision, mission, and goals of NCEF
  • Familiar with charitable organizations

Time Commitment:

  • Preparation and participation in monthly one-hour conference calls; Time to assist with Pro-bono programmatic efforts. Suggested two-year term

NCEF Fundraising Committee

The Fundraising Committee of the NAPFA Consumer Education Foundation (NCEF) supports the NCEF vision of “Changing lives through pro-bono financial advice” by developing and managing fundraising efforts supporting the foundation’s strategic plan.

The Committee

  • Provide input into developing fundraising campaigns to retain and acquire donors to achieve strategic fundraising imperatives
  • Help execute the annual fundraising campaign, including communication efforts, personal solicitation, and the acknowledgement process
  • Help identify and develop campaigns to solicit funds from target audiences including NAPFA members, NAPFA industry partners and grantors within the pro-bono financial planning arena

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Willingness to solicit donations, acknowledge donors and make a personal annual contribution
  • Committed to the vision, mission, and goals of NCEF
  • Familiar with charitable organizations

Time Commitment:

  • Preparation and participation in monthly one-hour conference calls; Time to assist with fundraising thank you calls. Suggested two-year term

Professional Development and Education Committee

The Committee:

  • Identifies annual priorities for NAPFA’s educational offerings including but not limited to conferences, webinars and ad hoc programs.
  • Facilitates the assessment of the professional development and educational needs of NAPFA members and other financial planning professionals.
  • Monitors the impact and viability of NAPFA’s educational offerings including but not limited to conferences, webinars and ad hoc programs.
  • Provides guidance and support to NAPFA volunteers with responsibility for developing content for the Association’s educational offerings.

Time Commitment

  • 2-year term with option to remain a third year
  • Monthly, hour long conference calls

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Members must regularly attend NAPFA conferences and webinars
  • Involved in other NAPFA educational offerings: conference committee, webinar committee, regional symposiums or study groups
  • Demographic representation is a consideration to the committee: firm size, region, industry tenure, age, gender, race, and other minority groups
  • Tied to the academic work and could lend that perspective and have ideas for bringing content into NAPFA educational offerings
  • Regularly attending non-NAPFA conferences and webinars
  • Experienced in educational programming or educational content
  • Active in the NAPFA community who can draw on their NAPFA network to help identify volunteers for various committees/working groups

Public Policy Committee

The Committee:

The Public Policy Committee monitors public policy issues affecting NAPFA, the RIA/Financial Planning community, and/or consumers. The committee discusses, formulates, and proposes organizational positions on legislative and regulatory issues of importance to the Fee-only community. They are also tasked with communicating NAPFA’s position to members, the press, policy makers, and consumers.

  • Reviews and comments on public policy issues affecting NAPFA, the RIA/Financial Planning community, and/or consumers
  • Discusses, formulates, and proposes organizational positions on legislative and regulatory issues of importance to the Fee-only community
  • Communicates NAPFA’s position to members, the press, policy makers, and consumers

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Interested in public policy and the legislative/regulatory issues affecting the financial planning ecosystem
  • Preferred candidates would have experience interacting with government officials and potentially relationships that could be leveraged to support the committee’s work

Time Commitment:

  • Monthly conference calls
  • 2-3 hours per month of volunteer-related work

Region Board Volunteers

NAPFA has four region boards (Northeast/Mid-Atlantic, South, West, and Midwest) who are responsible for creating meaningful experiences for members in their specific regions. The Region Boards:

  • Plan symposium events in their region
  • Engage with new NAPFA members
  • Work with universities to share information about NAPFA and fee-only financial planning
  • Offer scholarships to NAPFA events

This Opportunity Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Eager to be involved at the local level of the organization
  • Interested in planning events
  • Excited about working in collaborative and team environments

Time Commitment:

  • This is a year-round commitment
  • Participate on monthly conference calls
  • Expectation to attend yearly symposium events, one conference, and annual leadership meeting

Webinar Committee

The Committee:

  • Develops an annual slate of virtual learning sessions which compliments the programs offered at NAPFA conferences and other live events.
  • Supports NAPFA in identifying relevant and current topic.
  • Supports NAPFA in identifying speakers under the topics considered.
  • Reviews feedback of programs offered from the prior year
  • Is provided feedback and input from the NAPFA Education Committee

Time Commitment

  • 1 Year or when full calendar year of programs is scheduled
  • Volunteers have the option to remain on the committee a 2nd term
  • Bi-weekly hour-long calls until schedule is complete

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Involved in NAPFA’s educational opportunities
  • Experienced with virtual learning
  • Is interested in supporting, expanding and enhancing NAPFA’s educational opportunities to its members and other financial planning professionals

Womens Initiative

The NAPFA Women’s Initiative strives to attract, support, educate, and develop women as leaders within the financial advisory profession and to raise the awareness of the need for more female advisors.

The Initiative:

  • Facilitates virtual learning sessions, conference sessions, and magazine articles focused on issues that help to develop women as leader in the profession
  • Creates/shares content on its Facebook page

This Committee Is Recommended for Members Who Are:

  • Passionate about increasing gender diversity within NAPFA and developing women as leaders with NAPFA and the financial advisory profession

Time Commitment:

  • This is a year-round committee
  • Participate on monthly conference calls
  • Be active on the group’s social media page
  • Volunteer in various onsite activities if attending a conference or event
